28 girls at 1st SPTW Starter Girls Tournament in Brentwood

Providing opportunities for girls to get involved with chess is what SPTW is all about, especially at the starter level of chess.

Thanks to the kind sponsorship of Brentwood School in Essex, who allowed SPTW to hold this event for free, 28 girls from Essex and their neighbouring counties converged to play their first live chess tournament.

A fantastic day was had, all girls getting valuable tournament experience (such as using a chess clock, touch move rule etc). Our thumbnail photo shows all girls receiving special SPTW certificates at prizegiving, and probably more importantly, new friendships!

Results were not important however 10 year old Rose was thrilled to win all her 5 games and end up with a medal.

It is clear more live chess starter tournaments are needed for girls, if any school across the UK is looking to host one just contact Lorin via the ‘contact us’ button on the website homepage.
